THE GREAT HOT DOG GIVE-AWAY
As you read last month, the Club decided not to sell Hotdogs at the JPL Picnic because they were being given away as part of the admission price. Perhaps we could have sold some hotdogs to the throngs of people waiting in line for up to 45 minutes to be served.
The Club did set up a booth at the picnic with literature from the ARRL and stations operated on two meters and 220 Mhz with the Icom 211 and Midland 513 club transceivers and beam antennas. Only a few contacts were made because Big Rock is a big RF "Black Hole". No signal on either band moved the S-meter enough to peak up the beam direction.
Literature was handed out and questions answered about Amateur Radio. Four people signed up to attend our next Novice class starting on Sept. 15. The booth was operated by many of the Club members:

JULY BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
The Voyager 2 Saturn Encounter Commemorative was discussed. Art Zygielbaum will head the slow scan effort. Jack Patzold indicated that a color monitor was required to operate the slow scan color equipment. The purchase of such a device was approved.
It was decided that the Club should go ahead and make available a slow scan tape of the Voyager I event even though that tape may appear after the Voyager 2 event. A Voyager 2 tape would be make available only if pictures or information significantly different from Voyager I is discovered. A volunteer is needed to head the tape effort.
The Public Information Office will again subsidize the QSL cards. A volunteer is needed to oversee publication and distribution of the cards.
Merv MacMedan will issue the commemorative schedule next week. There will be two training sessions, one held during lunch and one to be held after work hours.
Stan Sander announced that a logo product committee has been appointed. John Repar and Jason Kovatch will try to determine what we will make available, how, and for what cost. The first product will be a patch.
The Club Treasurer, John McKinney,
announced that he has published a quarterly financial report.
George Morris presented the idea that some of the equipment money
should be used to purchase a 450 Mhz rig for Oscar and Phase
III. Jay Holladay wanted a 450 MHz linear.
Walt Diem has indicated that he wishes to be replaced on the repeater committee.
The repeater calls will be W6VIO/R for WR6APS, W6VIO/L for the link, and WB6IEA/A or /R for WR6APR. These changes will be made as soon as the WR6 calls expire (momentarily).
The WR6APR frequency has been co-channeled with a group in Whittier. This is for testing to indicate the amount of interference that will result.
John Walsh reported that there will be a 20 wpm code class beginning in the fall for potential amateur extras. Merv MacMedan pointed out that all class graduates, i.e. new hams, should be recognized in the Club newsletter.

CO-CHANNELING OF "CLOSED MACHINES"
The 220 SMA has taken the following action as indicated in a letter to all Repeater Trustees and SMA members:
The 220 SMA Frequency Board has a number of Requests for Coordination that have not been processed because of the lack of suitable open frequency channels in the geographical areas requested. In order to improve this situation the following channels are designated as PL protected, time shared channels:

These channels have been noted to be used by "small" special interest groups with small to medium use. The Frequency Coordinating Board will be assigning 2nd and 3rd systems to these channels in the near future. The low usage channels will obviously be doubled up first.

ARRL UHF CONTEST
The ARRL UHF contest begins at 12 noon PDT on Saturday, August 8, and ends at 12 noon PDT. on Sunday, August 9, 1981. Contacts may be made on Amateur bands above 220 Mhz. No station may contact any other station more than once per band for QSO credit, regardless of mode. For a valid contact to occur, each station must send and receive an exchange consisting of a signal report plus either a four or five digit number, indicating the position of the station in longitude and latitude, truncated to a whole number. Example: W6VIO would send 59 and 11834 as an exchange, since the longitude and latitude are 118.0 West, 34.0 North. Repeaters may 'not be used nor frequencies regularly occupied by a repeater even if the repeater is turned off!
I recommend Club members make contest contacts on 223.5 Mhz simplex with contest stations to increase the level of activity reported. For those interested in entering the contest, I can supply rules, entry forms, log sheets, and dupe sheets. Hope everyone on 220 Mhz gets on and makes at least a few contest contacts. LUCKY VISITORS
Just before our meeting of July 8, Merv MacMedan, N6NO, received a call from visitor control. They had two Belgian Amateurs in the lobby who dropped by JPL while on a vacation trip and wanted to visit W6VIO. They were unusually lucky: not only would they get to see W6VIO, but our monthly meeting was just about to begin!
Renaat de Wit, ON5RD (who also holds US call KB6ES) and Robert Van Royer, ON6VN (also KB6EV) were made welcome at our meeting. It seems they read about W6VIO in an article in CQ Magazine and decided it was worth a stop to see! Not to disappoint, Stan BrokI, N2YQ, gave them a guided tour of the hamshack after the meeting and then took them to -the ERC "souvenir shop" where they loaded up on space souvenirs. They both left very happy and anxious to QSO W6VIO during our next Voyager commemorative operation.

WHAT'S FAST SCAN?
Our guest speaker at the July 8 meeting was Tom O'Hara, W6ORG, who gave us an introduction on how to get on "ATV" (otherwise known as Fast-Scan Television). Tom presented a fascinating feature length color videotape showing some of the many applications of ATV --the last W6VIO commemorative, the Rose Parade, and examples of airplane-to-airplane ATV. Tom's company, P.C. Electronics in Arcadia, manufactures or sells everything you need to get on in that mode. A flyer with descriptions and prices was handed out at the meeting. If you missed it, call Tom at 447-4565 for a copy.
Tom is very helpful in advising you about getting started. He will be working with our Club during the upcoming Voyager commemorative doing the lion's share of the work to provide fast scan TV from JPL to the Pasadena Center as one of the main attractions at the Planetary Societies' big Festival, Planetfest.

A5 MAGAZINE SOLD!!
Henry Ruh, KB9FO, sold A5 MAGAZINE in June to Mike Stone, WB0QCD. The 14 year tradition will continue, reporting what's happening in A5 Amateur Television (both FSTV and SSTV), with renewed emphasis on expanding coverage to other Amateur Specialized Communication modes such as MSTV, RTTY, ASCII, MTTY, FAX, SAT, EME, etc. A5 MAGAZINE will continue to be a "Specialty Communicators" periodical.
W6VIO was awarded A5 MAGAZINE'S "Good Image" Award for its efforts in SSTV during the Viking encounter with Mars. Henry Ruh was here to give us the award in person.

SSTV ON COMMERCIAL BROADCAST?
An article in Popular Science discussed the possibilities of SSTV being broadcast on Foreign and other commercial broadcast stations. The following excerpt was taken from the middle of the article:
"Already there are some non-amateurs who have SSTV receiving capability. One spur to this was the rapid retransmission by SSTV of pictures just received from the Voyager Mission, thanks to ham station W6VIO at Jet Propulsion Laboratory." Experimental broadcasts have already been carried out. (from Popular Science DX Listening, July 81)
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
...For the long period of time that exists between our present Voyager 2 encounter with Saturn and the launch of Galileo in 1985 there are four years that need some sort of PR function (national or international) . We have been doing fairly well with Laboratory Milestones such as when Encounters occur but when there is not that sort of Milestone available then an Anniversary may be our salvation.
It is hard to figure out a substitute for an Encounter, but with the aid of the JPL Public Information or Public Education offices we may be able to work out some interesting anniversary events or accessions of some value to us both.

The highlight of the year's activities in the division is the Southwestern Division Convention. This year it is being held at the Ramada Safari Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona on October 9, 10, and 11. A full program of technical and operating talks has been scheduled, along with an exhibit hall full of the latest equipment and those good convention specials. This year we will also have swap tables available. Saturday night's banquet will feature a western steak dinner with all the trimmings, and our honored guest will be Senator Barry Goldwater, K7UGA. We are also pleased to announce that the President of ARRL, Mr. Harry Dannals, W2HD, will be with us at the League booth, forum, and banquet. Our guests from League Headquarters will be Dave Sumner, K1ZZ, and Dale Clift, WA3NLO.

EDITORIAL: REPEATER AT CROSSROADS
Our repeater sparkplug is retiring (from the repeater helm)! He has been at the helm since the inception of the repeater, and has done most of the maintenance work himself. He has carried our repeater flag into coordination groups and truly been one of the pioneers of the 220 Mhz band.
As a club, we have been able to sit back and benefit from his tremendous endeavors. Our President, Stan Sander, has been looking for a successor for Walt since the beginning of the year --- with no success. It is not fair to Walt nor to the Club as a whole that no one is willing to follow on.
Yes! there is work involved. There is a team of people willing to support you, but we still need a leader. The Club has been tremendously busy since 1976 with the buildup of the Club trailer facility plus running 5 commemoratives in 5 years, in addition to all of the other activities. Two things are quite clear: Walt needs a break and the Club needs the repeater. The repeater has become an integral part of the Club operation. Let's keep it going! (Ed)
